Land Below the Wind - Sabah
5th May 2003

Dear brother and sisters in the Nav,

Sorry for the long silence. After a while of difficulty accessing the Net, lost interest in writing emails. Anyway, I do read each of your mails, and those wonderful pictures. Thanks again.

It's coming to my eighth month working in Sabah. God has been kind and always there for me in my ups and downs.

So far, have no regrets coming to work here, except for those occasional pangs of loneliness. Life is pretty filled with work and on-calls, church, cell group, and rest. Of course there is time for occasional entertainment at the cinema, or a motorbike ride to the beach to watch the sunset.

Am getting more involved with church nowadays. Brought (accompanied) a group of SIB KL members to an interior church for mission trip last week. I did the interpretation for them, from English into BM, local slang. We had great fellowship, the SIB KL members were really on fire and excited for the Lord! Am really blessed by them. What we experienced at the local church was also great. They received us with great hospitality, and we had good fellowship, as well as a good feel of kampung life. Even met with the elderly evangelist who planted 7 churches in the locality.

Am involved also with cell group and prayer meetings. Can't really involve much in serving a particular area because of the frequent interruptions by on-calls and other duties.

After that, went for a PADI SCUBA diving course at Gayana Island. Hehe, I am now a licensed PADI Open Water SCUBA diver. Plan to take the Advanced course (in order to dive deeper), and then head off for diving in Sipadan Island.

Will be finishing my posting with the Medical Department soon. I must say I really enjoyed those 4 months, even with the hard work. We were given responsibilities and trusts. There was so much to learn. I was given extra duty as the Houseman leader ... extra work, little appreciation; but God taught me some useful lessons about communication and solving problems and conflicts. Praise the Lord.

After this will be moving on to Obs and Gynae. A Plumber's job, as my friends put it. And a good plumber is one who knows how to unplug uteruses at the right time without getting himself wet.

Sorry to disappoint you that Michael is still single and available despite after 8 months in KK, Sabah; with all the cute student nurses around. But don't worry, hehe, some church elders are looking out for suitable local candidates for me. Hahaa...

The people in Sabah is amazing. For example, you get things like 100% Chinese, 50% Chinese, 25% Chinese and other combinations. You get to meet Chinese who don't look like Chinese and don't speak Mandarin. You also get partial Chinese, even Kadazans, who can speak Mandarin, and fluent Hakka. In the end, the safest approach is to talk to a stranger in BM, with the local flavour of course.

Found some places for good food and good hangout. Can bring you there when you have chance to drop by.

Hope to do the White Water Rafting this coming Sunday. I will be celebrating Tadau Kaamaatan (Harvest Festival) end of this month, with my keluarga angkat.

Hope to hear from you again. God bless.
